This 1/2 hour class is for children from 5 to 10 years old with no martial arts experience. The approach to the class is holistic and includes basic Isshinryu skills, self-defense awareness, gross motor activity, and group participation. Classes have three basic segments: warm-ups, formal Isshinryu chart techniques, and technique/awareness drills. Warm-ups include both gross and fine motor movements and generally have a "secret martial arts skill" built in as in The Karate Kid movie. Isshinryu chart exercises are specific block, punch, footwork, and kick drills done as a synchronized group, technique and awareness drills introduce practice with a partner and punching/kicking bag drills.
We encourage parents to participate and assist with their child in class. There is no charge for parent participation. We feel that this is an opportunity for a strong family experience and provides the parent with first hand knowledge of their child's performance. With readiness children may progress to the traditional class before the age of 11. This is a decision made among the child, parents, and instructors.
